Subaru didn’t put a drain plug on the transmission and said it was lifetime fluid; therefore, didn’t expect you to ever change it,  o r something like that.

Do most manufacturers put drain plugs in??

I’ve always had to drop pan to drain trans fluid.

Ah!  Yes, I discovered that concept when I got the Z3...I guess BMW figured the car would not last much beyond 8 years.  At least they put in a drain plug, tho...

I could never get past the windows on these. The last time I saw one in person I was installing car stereos for circuit city!

There’s a manual swapped one running around locally. It’s cool. I’d like to own it. Supposedly the swap is fairly straightforward, Subarus tend to interchange like Legos, I’ve been told.

I’ve never owned a vehicle with a transmission drain plug from factory?

I’m sure there are some autos out there with a drain plug, but they’re not the majority.

Insufficient cooling of the fluid. The internal passages were too small and often got clogged of debris causing them to overheat. There is no temp gauge or warning light. The fluid would degrade and turn acidic causing the clutch material to start sloughing off making the issue worse until it would stop pulling . Fix was to rebuild with thorough cleaning, and installing the retrofit cooling kit. Or swap to an sti manual box and rear diff. That auto boxes weren’t bad, once repaired, and fairly geared pretty well for the car. Though they are much more fun with a stick.

Yup. Aside fr om the pedals, it is completely bolt in. Need to drill a few holes for clutch pedal/clutch mastwr cylinder . They can be swapped in about a day.

This was an issue on the early 4EATs. By 1994 or so there was a revision with wider passages. They also added an external filter.
